Welcome to Woolly Potato

Hello…. and welcome to Woolly Potato.

My name is Julie Hannah.  I live in Edinburgh, Scotland

At the tail end of last century, I graduated from the Scottish College of Textiles (Galashiels) with a degree in Textile Design. Whether that qualifies me to stab wool is up for debate… Some of the results can be seen here on my website (we won’t talk about the injuries).

Needle felting is a process involving an extremely sharp, fine, barbed needle and dry wool. To begin – you take a handful of wool roving (carded, but unspun wool). Then you gently stab the wool with a special felting needle until you create (hopefully) what you set out to do. I suppose it’s a kind of sculpting.

It’s a time consuming process – e.g a budgie takes approx 5 hours, a panda 3 hours. A new design can take many hours of development.

I occasionally sell my designs on Etsy. (Shop name is WoollyPotato)

I am not currently taking on any commissions.

Big thanks to Graeme Rae who set up the blog, and to Mark Boas for setting up the http://www.woollypotato.com domain, and to Dave Watson for tweaking technical stuff …. if only computers were made of wool….

Thanks also to Gareth Hughes for taking such great photos (the not so great ones were taken by me).
